Birdseye Maple Jewellery Box

This beautiful Birdseye maple jewellery box was made using Canadian grown maple. These particular pieces were chosen because of the Birdseye effect. This gives the wood an extra visual interest. To give the box a darker elegant look, a coat of walnut coloured stain was applied. The beads were left natural to separate the lid from the box as well as to frame the Birdseye figuring. A coat of clear polyurethane not only protects the finish but gives it a silky shine.
The Birdseye affect gives the normally soft white of the maple a unique look. This affect is actually caused by the tree trying to get more sun in a bad growing season. It sprouts hundreds of little buds, trying to grow more leaves. When the bad season is passed the extra tiny branches are discarded, leaving behind hundreds of little knots. This is just another way that nature creates beauty from adversity.
